Reading Notes: Week 2

Image
Yay! We are getting started on our reading assignments. Reading the overview of the assignment and knowing that the point was to “read like a writer” was kind of intimidating because I am not naturally a good writer by any means. In Part A of this assignment, one of the units I enjoyed reading was the Japanese mythology unit. Seeing the story of Susanoo, the Japanese storm God was really neat because I mentioned that this was the type of stories I would like to continue to read. The following are notes on the stories I liked the most. The Devine: ·          The God of seas and storms, Susanoo is the main character of the story and his opponent is an eight-forked serpent named Orochi. ·          I enjoy the amount of detail that goes into describing things like physical features, and smaller things as well ·          Using words that are sophisticated but still easy to read adds to the overall theme/aesthetic of this story Fables: ·          Aesop’s fables are always fa

Reading Options

To be quite honest I was a little overwhelmed when looking over all of the stories. There are SO many! That is what makes it great though, you have so many options to read in this "UnTextbook"! The first unit that caught my eye was the Japanese Mythology unit. My mother is Japanese so I have heard a lot of stories growing up, but there's also so many I haven't heard of before. I enjoyed seeing that there really are so many different stories to discover.   Amaterasu (Google) Another unit I think I would like to read more about is the English Fairy Tale unit. There are multiple units on this so I don't think I could get bored reading! The Old Woman and Her Pig was a story that made we want to keep reading the other stories located in that unit. Lastly, I want to keep reading more about the Ballads of Robin Hood . We all know the cartoon Robin Hood and it intrigued me because of that!

Time Strategies

Image
For this semester with it being my last semester at OU, it is particularly important to practice good time management skills when it comes to this class and my other classes as well. I work a full time job, and I have been working a full time job the entire time that I have been in college so I am used to saying that I am "too busy". The article by Tim Grahl called The Myth of "Too Busy" really caught my eye for this reason. The article brings up a good point that most of the time that we think we are busy, if we learned how to prioritize our time better, then we wouldn't be as busy as we think we are. I think that will be the key to success for this class. The Realistic Study Plans article by Amanda Collins is information that will be important to me during this semester. The biggest part of the article that I think will be useful is where it says "look at what needs to be done, and fully understand it". I can't wait until the last minute to do

Technology

Image
As I have mentioned before, this class is set up in a way that none of my other classes (including online classes) have been set up before. It's a good point that this technology tools that we are using is more consistent with technology we will be using after graduating. The closest thing I use to blogging is Twitter, and you're limited to a short amount of characters. I'm hoping that with these blog posts, I will be able to become more eloquent with my words. I am pretty familiar with Google Docs, so the extra credit assignments that require that won't be difficult to navigate and turn in! photo from google

Class Assignments

The format of this class is totally new to me. I have never blogged whether for class or for personal use but I have always been intrigued by blogging; just never had the time to invest into creating a blog. I think this class will really open up my imagination and help my creative side flourish, especially when we have to create our own stories. I'm also looking forward to reading other classmates posts, and getting to know everyone in the class! The extra credit assignments we can do are really generous and I'm actually really looking forward to learning more about the growth mindset! Photo from google

Storybook favorites

1.        The first storybook that I really enjoyed was the Epic Women Tell All . I love the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise and the way that they spun this story to include it was really creative. It’s a story about three women: Kaikeyi, Sita, and Amba. I like that they took the stories of these women and what happened to them and created a strong, independent storyline for them. At one point during Sita’s story she expressed “I want my legacy to be one of education, beauty, and love. I want to be known for the work I’ve done, not the man I married”, and that was powerful to me. I liked that the design of the page was nice and had everything displayed in locations that were easy to find.   2.        The second storybook that caught my eye was The Fairy Godmother Union Strike .   I think that most people are familiar with the old fairy godmother story so I think the title is pretty self-explanatory. I enjoyed this story because you can see another side of the fairy godmothers

The Growth Mindset

Image
I actually have never heard of the Carol Dweck and the Growth Mindset before. In the first video I liked where she talked about "Not Yet". Hearing not yet is so much more encouraging then hearing no, or that you failed at something. I've always thought that what is meant to be, will be. I like to think that these two correlate with each other because if something doesn't happen like you hoped that it would, you could give up or you could say "well it's not my time, yet ". I found this picture posted on Growth Mindset & Feedback Cats . It reminded me of something that my math professor said this week. He was explaining why he doesn't take any work that is turned in with pen. He said that "pencils have erasers, and the ability to erase things came the ability to make mistakes. Mistakes mean that we are learning, and that's the important part". It is so true! It's okay to make mistakes because we can only grow from there!

An introduction to Emily!

Image
Hello everyone, welcome to my blog! The Venetian Hotel canals in LV, Nevada     So as you can see my name is Emily and I am majoring in Economics and graduating this fall. Going into college Econ wasn't really something I thought of doing but while taking Micro and Macroeconomics for my general education Business courses, I really enjoyed learning more about economics. As for what I wan't to do with my degree: that part is still undecided. I think I am leaning towards banking or working for the treasury department but I haven't decided just quite yet.    Well now to the personal part of my introduction! Along with my mom and dad, I have one older sister named Erika who also attends OU. We (my sister and I) had a very interesting childhood where we had the privilege of moving around a lot due to my father being in the Navy. I was born in Texas (near Corpus Christi) and we lived in Japan for 8 years (non consecutively), Hawaii, and California. In my opinion, Japan wa

London, my favorite place!

Image
When I saw that we were writing a post about our favorite place, London was the only place that came to mind.  I had the opportunity to study abroad there in the Summer of 2017. There were many things I loved about it including: meeting people from all types of different cultures, learning about the city and country's (England) rich history, and just getting to walk around in such a beautiful city with amazing architecture.  (All of these photos are photos that I took or had someone take of me with my own camera!) Here is a photo of me that my roommate Jessica took of me on my camera sitting across the river of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.  Having fun at the Warner Brothers studio tour of Harry Potter! A sunny day in London :) We got lucky and it only rained about twice the whole time we were there! Our flats were RIGHT next to the British Museum. Wow, what an incredible place filled with amazing artifacts. Trafalgar Square. I would walk her
